How Does CBD Work?
We mentioned the endocannabinoid system (ECS) above. CBD, like all cannabinoids, is a chemical compound that functions within the ECS.
The ECS regulates how humans respond to stimuli such as pain, hunger, mood, or even memory. There are many cannabinoids, and all of them work with at least one of the two ECS receptors. CBD works with both of them, which is significant.
The body itself produces its own compounds to interact with the ECS receptors. Called endogenous cannabinoids, they produce natural effects inside our bodies. Consuming THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids merely reproduces and augments the effects we already experience from endogenous cannabinoids.
A 2014 US NIH study found that almost all human diseases might potentially be treated by modulating ECS activity. In fact, CBD and THC can often provide benefits for a wide range of users because many, if not most, serious and chronic illnesses result in a dysregulated endocannabinoid system.
How to Dose CBD Oil?
The FDA does not approve CBD oil as a medicine, no matter how you use it. This means there is no official set of dosage guidelines. This is even more complicated thanks to the ongoing criminalization of cannabis and the resulting stifling of research into this area.
However, to date we know some things about dosing CBD oil thanks to the science:
- In adults, CBD is safe and well-tolerated at doses up to 1,500 mg per day.
- At starting doses of 100 mg/day increasing gradually to 300 mg/day, CBD has pain killing effects.
- At least some cases show better pain killing effects with lower doses of CBD—so it’s important to start low, go slow, and engage in careful trial and error.
- Compared to psychiatric drugs used to treat psychotic disorders and problems like anxiety and epilepsy, CBD has a more favorable safety profile.
- Higher doses of 600mg of CBD benefit people with social anxiety disorder.
In general, the right dose of CBD oil for you depends on body weight, genetics, severity of symptoms, and sometimes things like other medications. Typically, the more you weigh and the more severe your symptoms are, the more CBD oil you might need before you experience relief. That said, a higher or lower dose may be right for you since each person is genetically unique.
CBD is usually dosed in milligrams. Most people take between 1 and 5 milligrams of CBD for every 10 pounds of body weight.

Hemp Seed Oil Versus CBD Oil
CBD oil is derived from industrial hemp, but “hemp oil” and “hemp seed oil” are not at all the same product. Hemp seed oil is probably not what you are looking for, unless you are about to whip up a healthy treat loaded with fab fatty acids and omega oils.
In most cases, CBD oils are made from the hemp plant. In contrast, hemp seed oil or hemp oil comes from the seeds of the hemp plant. Although this may seem confusing, the plant itself, especially its flowers, and the seeds are biochemically distinct, and produce oil products that are also different.
Only the plant contains CBD, not the seed. There is no way to start with hemp seeds and extract therapeutic levels of CBD oil. Hemp seeds also don’t contain the other beneficial compounds that make full-spectrum CBD oil so powerful, including terpenoids, flavonoids, and other cannabinoids such as CBN, CBC, and CBG.
And unlike hemp seed oil, CBD oil directly interacts with the endocannabinoid system to help treat issues like depression, anxiety, insomnia, inflammation, and pain.
Broad-Spectrum vs. Full-Spectrum vs. Isolate
There are a few types of CBD to consider here. Under the federal law, full-spectrum CBD oils contain only a tiny amount of THC: 0.3 percent or less, total. Although this cannot cause a “high” or produce any psychoactive effects, it can potentially trigger a very sensitive drug test. Full-spectrum hemp oils retain all of the components of the entire cannabis plant, including the terpenes and flavonoids that smell and taste so good, and other potentially beneficial cannabinoids such as CBG.
Broad-spectrum CBD oil still has almost everything a full-spectrum CBD oil has—in fact, they are usually produced in the same way. However, a broad-spectrum CBD oil has no THC in it at all. The THC is typically removed toward the end of the process using chromatography.
Many brands sink extensive effort, time, and money into creating full-spectrum CBD oils or broad-spectrum CBD oils because of the “entourage effect” we mentioned above. In contrast, products made with CBD isolate are made with pure CBD, and therefore cannot produce the entourage effect.
