The 7 Best CBD Oil Tinctures on the Market

It may feel like the explosion of CBD products onto the market is a gift. In a way, it is. But how do you choose a CBD oil when there are literally hundreds of options out there, and there’s no way to know what you’re getting?

In an ocean of gummies, hemp spliffs, CBD topicals, hemp extracts, and just random CBD companies popping up everywhere, how can anyone know what to buy? We’re obsessed with CBD, and we’ve got your covered.

What Are the Best CBD Oils in 2021?

We’ve tried so many different CBD oil products over the year, we feel like we are experts just by our experience. We’ve had amazing tinctures that helped us feel relaxed, low quality and bad tasting products that we would never recommend. You can benefit from all our research, and learn from our mistakes–we’ll only be recommending the small amount of CBD tinctures we absolutely believe are the best you can buy. Here we go!

Quality

Local farms in Kentucky and Colorado—some of the best hemp growing regions in the US—are the source of hemp for Spruce. Known for their sustainable, safe farming processes, these family-owned and operated farms consistently produce some of the most potent, highest quality hemp strains for CBD products.

Another thing we love about Spruce is their moonshine extraction method—a unique and clean way to create a high-quality full-spectrum high-CBD hemp seed oil. But don’t worry; there’s no moonshine taste or anything like that. Just like any other solvent, all of the moonshine is completely purged from the product before bottling, leaving nothing but pure, whole-plant CBD extract.

All of that is great, but what’s in the bottle and COA seals the deal on quality. Third-party testing results for a 2400mg bottle show high levels of CBD, of course. But you’re also getting a buffet of trace amounts of other cannabinoids that won’t get you high, including: Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA), Cannabichromene (CBC), Cannabinol (CBN), Cannabigerolic Acid (CBGA), and Cannabigerol (CBG). So, lots of cannabinoids—more than many CBD oils on the market, including some that are full-spectrum offerings.

As for terpenes, Spruce keeps it a bit simpler. This CBD oil features two of the more relaxing terpenes, caryophyllene and myrcene, plus a less famous terpene typically in certain species of spruce, Sabinene Hydrate.

Value

There are two bottles of Spruce CBD oil in two potencies: 750mg for $89 and 2400mg for $269. Per mg that is only $0.11, so although the total cost might seem higher, Spruce CBD oil pricing is less expensive than most other brands.

Transparency

We love Spruce for transparency. All of their CBD oil is independently tested by a third party laboratory and you can find the results on their site. Spruce guarantees their CBD oil is free of harmful heavy metals, chemicals, and pesticides. The only downside: access to the details of their moonshine extraction process is limited.

Customer Experience

Spruce offers a friendly, responsive experience plus free US shipping and delivery in 2 to 4 days—at least normally. Spruce’s return policy states that after your first purchase you can qualify for a full refund but your following purchases must be returned unopened to qualify.

SabaiDee, Super Good Vibes 1000mg

sabaidee best cbd tincture

Quality

Colorado-based SabaiDee sources their hemp locally from sustainable farms. They extract and purify their oil via a proprietary process to infuse and refine it before packaging. SabaiDee further guarantees a top quality product by infusing in high-end MCT oil.

Lab reports from analyses of Super Good Vibes CBD oil show high levels of CBD. This oil also has the non-intoxicating cannabinoid CBDV or cannabidivarin—about 12 mg of CBD per 30mL of it.

Lab testing also reveals a rainbow of amazing terpenes, including: pinene, myrcene, limonene, isopulegol, caryophyllene, humulene, guaiol, and bisabolol. This is one of the best things about the SabaiDee product line and one of the reasons we love it.

Value

Prices for SabaiDee CBD oil products are on the pricier side a la carte, ranging from $48.95 to $249.95. However, the $135.12 Great Vibes Bundle is a thrifty two-pack option for the everyday CBD user.

Transparency

We love SabaiDee for transparency. Every batch of oil is tested twice: once in-house, and once by a third-party lab. SabaiDee discloses tons of production process information as well as their lab test results directly on their website.

Customer Experience

The SabaiDee is just nice to deal with, whether or not you’re happy. We also love that they plant a tree in North America for every bottle you buy. SabaiDee also offers free US shipping and a happiness guarantee. Request a refund from their team if you’re not satisfied.

Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil: 7mg CBD/1mL

Quality

Made from USA grown hemp in Colorado, Charlotte’s Web CBD oil features a variety of phytocannabinoids in a true full-spectrum extract. The Charlotte’s Web team uses both CO2 extraction and alcohol extraction processes to make their CBD oil products. This CBD oil is a CO2 extraction product, offering a more mellow, smoother flavor than the alcohol-derived alternative.

According to lab results (which are linked below and only available in the form of batch reports), Charlotte’s Web CBD oil certainly delivers on CBD. But you’ll also get CBDV, CBDA, CBC, and CBG. This is an excellent high CBD choice that also provides a holistic blend of other cannabinoids, without an overpowering plant-y or bitter flavor.

There is no terpene profile in the lab results, unfortunately.

Value

Bought separately, each bottle of Charlotte’s Web CBD oil costs between $39.99 to $188.99 depending on potency and bottle size. Charlotte’s Web also offers a B4GO bulk promotion and subscription options that allow you to get a discount on every bottle.

If you kind of just want to try a few things and you don’t mind going up in potency, the summer sampler pack or snowday sampler (depending on what time of year it is) gives you four bottles of 17mg CBD oil, one in each flavor, for 20% off.

Transparency

We love the information that’s on the website about the company background, the Charlotte’s Web story, and the site also has details about serving size and the bottle dropper and things like that. However, you won’t find any detailed information on the site about their manufacturing or extraction processes, and you won’t just see lab test results posted. They also fail to disclose things like whether products are vegan or what the THC content of the products are.

You can get your batch report here on the website, but only if you have a product in hand; you can’t just see what’s in the products.

Customer Experience

For all orders within the US over $74.99, Charlotte’s Web offers free ground shipping on. There is a flat shipping rate of $8.99 for orders under $74.99. Packages from Charlotte’s Web typically take about seven business days to arrive at your door from the time you click “buy,” which is pretty good. If you’re not happy with your order, you can exchange it for another product or request a full refund within 30 days of purchase.

NuLeaf Naturals CBD Oil

Quality

If you’re looking for something that is all high potency, full-spectrum and no noise or frills, NuLeaf Naturals is one of the best CBD products out there. NuLeafNaturals CBD oil sources its hemp in Colorado from growers using sustainable farming practices. This CBD oil is made using hemp that is free of herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers, and is 100 percent organic.

NuLeaf Naturals uses a CO2 extraction process, meaning there are no solvents or heat exposure issues potentially compromising quality. You also get the added benefit of the carrier oil—hemp seed oil—which is a non-GMO, 100% organic carrier that itself is filled with healthy fats. This CBD oil also contains B & D vitamins and zinc for overall wellness.

Part of this very basic product is that it is free of sweeteners, flavors, and other additives. This means it has that full-spectrum taste that can be bitter or grassy to some users. But this also means you’re free of added stuff in your CBD oil.

Value

NuLeaf Naturals full spectrum CBD oil is available in a range of potencies, so you can choose based on your budget and ideal dose:

  • 240mg/5mL bottle ($0.16/mg)
  • 725mg/15mL bottle ($0.14/mg)
  • 1,450mg/30mL bottle ($0.12/mg)
  • 2,425mg/50mL bottle ($0.10/mg)
  • 4,850mg/100mL bottle ($0.09/mg)

Transparency

Like Charlotte’s Web, NuLeafNaturals makes you look up your specific batch to actually see what is in the product. This is a bummer if you’re trying to be an informed shopper before buying.

According to the site, NuLeaf Naturals CBD oil has a range of cannabinoids, including CBG, CBN, and CBC. It also contains flavonoids and terpenes that target things like inflammation and pain—maybe caryophyllene or myrcene, but again, you can’t see on the site.

Customer Service

NuLeafNaturals offers free shipping anywhere in the US within 2 to 3 business days via Priority Mail. You can get it faster with the Express 1 to 2 day shipping option.

You can return new, unopened, unused products for a full refund within 30 days of delivery, but you pay shipping for the return. On the other hand, if the return is NuLeafNaturals’s fault, like if the product is defective, they will give you the full refund and pay shipping costs.

Joy Organics, Premium Hemp Tincture

joy organics recommended hemp tincture

Quality

Joy Organic’s, led by real person and founder, Joy, takes a proactive approach to creating CBD products. The team works with the largest hemp grower in the US to source the raw hemp compounds they use, and Joy reportedly oversees product development and quality control for the company personally. This is reflected in the 7-step quality control process that Joy Organics uses throughout the business.

Third-party test results show that Joy Organics CBD oils contain high levels of CBD, plus CBDV, CBDA, CBN, and CBG.

Joy Organics does not provide a terpene profile for the CBD oils, but they are made with natural essential oils.

Value

All Joy Organic’s CBD tinctures are 1oz (30ml) bottles ranging in potency and price from $34.95 to $134.95. This is a great value based on the level of quality of the oil.

Transparency

Joy Organics offers lots of information on their site, including: an in-depth description of the 7-step quality control process, more detailed information about the extraction process, and Joy Organics third-party lab results. Our only complaint was wanting to know more about terpenes and other phytochemicals.

Customer Experience

Joy Organics offers free 3-day shipping within the US and a 30-day money back guarantee. The team is responsive and respectful.

Medterra CBD Oil Tincture

medterra cbd oil tincture

Quality

For a totally THC-free option, we love Medterra CBD Oil Tincture. This remains a pure and potent CBD offering and eliminates the worry of triggering a drug test.

Medterra is already a reputable CBD brand, focused on high quality and outstanding flavor. The Medterra team preserves beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes, and other hemp compounds using CO2 extraction, to further produce that smooth, inoffensive flavor they are known for.

And while so many brands source hemp from China, Russia, or South Korea, Medterra sources hemp for all of its products locally from the best hemp in the world: right here in the USA. Medterra is based in one of the nation’s hemp hot spots, Kentucky, and as a member of the Industrial Hemp Pilot Program, Medterra follows the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s guidelines.

This means Medterra derives its pure CBD oil tincture from non-GMO, 100 percent organic hemp. And you’ll love the gentle flavor of this tincture—it’s not at all bitter or grassy, despite the sizable 30-1mL doses in the 500mg, 1000mg and 3000mg sizes.

Value

Medterra CBD tinctures are flexible and user-friendly at all strengths. Since each one-ounce bottle is well-marked, it’s easy to dose, measure, and adjust your amount.

This basic CBD oil tincture comes in 500mg, 1000mg and 3000mg sizes that cost $34.99, $55.99, and $132.99, respectively. It’s a very low cost option, not to mention a pure CBD alternative.

Transparency

Just check the third-party lab results right on the site: this is a pure product. The only ingredients are CBD isolate extract, medium-chain triglyceride MCT oil from coconuts, and citrus.

Medterra products also bear the US Hemp Authority seal, so you know you can trust the source.

Customer Service

Medterra ships most orders placed before noon Monday through Friday the same day, but this is not guaranteed. Typical shipping times range from 4 to 7 business days after processing, excluding holidays, bad weather, etc.

You can request a full refund, minus shipping costs, within 30 days of product receipt. This is just if you’re not satisfied. If the product is damaged, show proof of that within 72 hours of receipt for support.

Lazarus Naturals Blood Orange High Potency CBD Tincture

Quality

Lazarus Naturals’ high potency CBD isolate tinctures come in 15ml and 60ml sizes. The 15ml bottle has 750 mg of CBD, while the larger version has 3000 mg of CBD—each has a consistent 50 mg/ml. The COA also shows you how pure this is: nothing but CBD, organic MCT, and naturally derived blood orange extract.

These tinctures, made from CBD isolate, are available in a truly flavorless variety as well as three flavored styles: tropical breeze, blood orange, and wintermint. Our favorite was definitely the blood orange—really a delicious flavor that scares away any hint of bitter plant-y CBD grass aftertaste.

Lazarus Naturals’ tinctures are third-party tested. They are also derived from Oregon hemp, most of which comes from Lazarus’ own farm, and all of which is organic and non-GMO hemp.

Value

This is among the lowest prices you’ll find. At the sizes and potency above, that’s around $.04 per mg of CBD. You really can’t do much better—not for a quality product.

Transparency

Lazarus Naturals offers the COA for each product right on the website. You can also find company information and lots of other great details.

Customer Service

Lazarus Naturals is excellent for reliable, no questions asked customer service. All orders placed before before 11:45am Pacific time ship via USPS or UPS the same day, or the next business day if you order later. Delivery via USPS is free for all orders over $25. You can pay extra for expedited shipping.

But it gets better. Lazarus Naturals offers free returns within 90 days of delivery for any reason on any products you buy directly from them. Even after the 90 days they will hear you out on a partial refund in some cases. They really want to keep customers happy.

In a crowded and poorly regulated market, it’s hard to choose the best CBD oil. Although there is plenty of high-quality, pure CBD oil for sale, there is also a worrying number of CBD products that are less reputable.

Each product claims to contain the best, most effective CBD oil. In reality, however, CBD oil products vary in their quality significantly. This is not like the market for prescription drugs, either; you can’t assume the FDA will as closely regulate CBD oils right now, even if they are your medicine.

This all means that it is up to you, the consumer, to identify the safest, best CBD oils on the market. That could mean too much shopping, money, and research if it wasn’t for this review.

In this post we’ll give you the best CBD oils on the market right now, explain some of the benefits of CBD, and tell you why they’re better. There is something for everyone here, so let’s go!

Medical Disclaimer

Research we will elaborate on indicates that CBD can help people with a range of pain issues, sleep troubles, mental disorders, and other conditions. Different people use these products for a range of things.

However, these CBD products are not intended to diagnose, prevent, treat, or cure any disease or medical condition. Any CBD products have the potential to interact with other pharmaceuticals, so especially if you take other medication, you should always talk to a healthcare provider before using any CBD products.

What is CBD Oil?

best cbd oil tinctures

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a medically active plant compound or phytocannabinoid. CBD occurs naturally in the cannabis plant’s resinous flowers along with other cannabinoids, including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

In fact, gooey cannabis resin is loaded with more than 100 unique cannabinoids. Resin and cannabinoids are what makes a cannabis plant’s trichomes or “buds” sticky, and that stickiness serves several actual purposes.

The trichomes produce both the oily, medicinal cannabinoids and fragrant terpenes. These aromatic phytochemicals lend all kinds of plants their unique tastes and smells. Resin also protects the cannabis plant from predators, pests, and excessive heat and ultraviolet radiation.

CBD and THC are closely related, and each offer significant therapeutic benefits. These two cannabinoids are better studied by researchers than any other part of the plant, although much remains to be done.

Unlike THC, CBD does not intoxicate users or make them feel those “stoned” side effects or “high” feelings that we all love cannabis for. CBD and THC act with the same receptors in the body in different ways. Instead, a scientific literature review reveals that CBD is a safe, non-addictive, therapeutic compound.

Since Congress passed the Agricultural Act in 2018 enabling farmers to grow industrial hemp legally, we have witnessed an explosion of CBD products onto the market. They are appealing to users because CBD products typically contain 0–0.3 percent THC, so they may assist users with health problems cannabis generally may treat—without the medical marijuana “head high.”

What is a CBD Oil Tincture?

Among the more popular ways of consuming CBD, CBD oil tinctures are made like any kind of tincture, by soaking or simmering hemp flowers and plants in neutral alcohols. This process extracts CBD and other cannabinoids naturally, leaving a full-spectrum tincture once the alcohol is boiled off.

The maker then infuses the extract in a safe to consume carrier oil such as olive oil, hemp seed oil, or coconut oil. They often also flavor the product, ideally with natural essential oils like peppermint or citrus flavorings. A concentrated, high quality CBD oil tincture is a basic method to dose CBD under the tongue or orally in the form of a bottle of drops.

Is there THC in CBD Oil?

Sometimes. It depends on what kind you buy. But there’s never more than a very low amount that cannot get you high—0.3 percent or less—that is regulated by law.

A minuscule amount of THC exists in full-spectrum CBD products to help create the entourage effect. The idea is to enable all constituent cannabinoids in the tincture to help each other achieve their maximum effect collectively.

If you are in a situation where no amount of THC is okay, such as a zero-tolerance workplace, shop for broad-spectrum CBD products or those made from CBD isolate instead. Those products have no THC in them at all, although broad-spectrum CBD products may have other cannabinoids such as CBG and CBN.

Does CBD Oil Get You High?

No. CBD oil made from industrial hemp cannot get you high. Hemp-derived CBD oils and cannabis-derived CBD oils are qualitatively different, but neither will technically get you “high.”

To be legal in all states, CBD derived from hemp must have less than 0.3 percent THC. All of these products are legal.

CBD Oil User’s Guide

How can CBD products like CBD oil benefit you the most? CBD has many proven benefits.

CBD has analgesic, sleep-promoting, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antioxidant, and anticonvulsant effects. In fact, here is some research into CBD and its benefits, and what CBD products may help treat:

CBD helps treat so many things because of the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Every mammalian body has endocannabinoid receptors in it where endocannabinoids, including both THC and CBD, work. There may even be a clinical endocannabinoid deficiency that causes many treatment resistant issues such as migraines, IBS, and fibromyalgia.

Although more research remains to be done in this area, it is clear that CBD has many benefits. And while it’s no cure-all, like many other helpful products, CBD is more likely to alleviate symptoms than it is to “cure” an illness.

But wouldn’t you be pretty happy not feeling those symptoms if they were pain, nausea, anxiety, migraines, inflammation, or something like that?

How Does CBD Work?

We mentioned the endocannabinoid system (ECS) above. CBD, like all cannabinoids, is a chemical compound that functions within the ECS.

The ECS regulates how humans respond to stimuli such as pain, hunger, mood, or even memory. There are many cannabinoids, and all of them work with at least one of the two ECS receptors. CBD works with both of them, which is significant.

The body itself produces its own compounds to interact with the ECS receptors. Called endogenous cannabinoids, they produce natural effects inside our bodies. Consuming THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids merely reproduces and augments the effects we already experience from endogenous cannabinoids.

A 2014 US NIH study found that almost all human diseases might potentially be treated by modulating ECS activity. In fact, CBD and THC can often provide benefits for a wide range of users because many, if not most, serious and chronic illnesses result in a dysregulated endocannabinoid system.

How to Dose CBD Oil?

The FDA does not approve CBD oil as a medicine, no matter how you use it. This means there is no official set of dosage guidelines. This is even more complicated thanks to the ongoing criminalization of cannabis and the resulting stifling of research into this area.

However, to date we know some things about dosing CBD oil thanks to the science:

In general, the right dose of CBD oil for you depends on body weight, genetics, severity of symptoms, and sometimes things like other medications. Typically, the more you weigh and the more severe your symptoms are, the more CBD oil you might need before you experience relief. That said, a higher or lower dose may be right for you since each person is genetically unique.

CBD is usually dosed in milligrams. Most people take between 1 and 5 milligrams of CBD for every 10 pounds of body weight.

Start with a low dose and see how you feel. For those who feel great, wonderful! You’re done, and for a low price. If you don’t get the effects you hope for, give it some time. Once your body adjusts after a week or so, slowly and gradually increase your dose. You’ll get there eventually.

To determine CBD dose and serving size, always read the label. Be careful to note whether a serving is a full-dropper or a half, because this is different from brand to brand.

Remember:

  • Read the label. Be careful.
  • Do the math. Start your dose of CBD at about 1 milligram for every 10 pounds of body weight.
  • Confirm the dose against the label again.
  • Test the dose for a week.
  • Adjust the dose based on what you need.

How to Use CBD Oil?

CBD oil tinctures are made for oral and sublingual use only. Never vape these CBD oils.

To use CBD oil sublingually, hold your dose of CBD oil under your tongue for at least 60 seconds and then swallow it.

There are many benefits to sublingual use of CBD oil tinctures:

  • The CBD enters the system more rapidly compared to something like CBD gummies
  • It’s easier for people who get nauseated or have trouble swallowing pills or gaggy oils
  • Since effects can be decreased by digestion, sublingual use bypasses some of this issue, accessing capillaries under the tongue to allow the CBD to directly enter the bloodstream

Hemp Seed Oil Versus CBD Oil

CBD oil is derived from industrial hemp, but “hemp oil” and “hemp seed oil” are not at all the same product. Hemp seed oil is probably not what you are looking for, unless you are about to whip up a healthy treat loaded with fab fatty acids and omega oils.

In most cases, CBD oils are made from the hemp plant. In contrast, hemp seed oil or hemp oil comes from the seeds of the hemp plant. Although this may seem confusing, the plant itself, especially its flowers, and the seeds are biochemically distinct, and produce oil products that are also different.

Only the plant contains CBD, not the seed. There is no way to start with hemp seeds and extract therapeutic levels of CBD oil. Hemp seeds also don’t contain the other beneficial compounds that make full-spectrum CBD oil so powerful, including terpenoids, flavonoids, and other cannabinoids such as CBN, CBC, and CBG.

And unlike hemp seed oil, CBD oil directly interacts with the endocannabinoid system to help treat issues like depression, anxiety, insomnia, inflammation, and pain.

Broad-Spectrum vs. Full-Spectrum vs. Isolate

There are a few types of CBD to consider here. Under the federal law, full-spectrum CBD oils contain only a tiny amount of THC: 0.3 percent or less, total. Although this cannot cause a “high” or produce any psychoactive effects, it can potentially trigger a very sensitive drug test. Full-spectrum hemp oils retain all of the components of the entire cannabis plant, including the terpenes and flavonoids that smell and taste so good, and other potentially beneficial cannabinoids such as CBG.

Broad-spectrum CBD oil still has almost everything a full-spectrum CBD oil has—in fact, they are usually produced in the same way. However, a broad-spectrum CBD oil has no THC in it at all. The THC is typically removed toward the end of the process using chromatography.

Many brands sink extensive effort, time, and money into creating full-spectrum CBD oils or broad-spectrum CBD oils because of the “entourage effect” we mentioned above. In contrast, products made with CBD isolate are made with pure CBD, and therefore cannot produce the entourage effect.

CBD isolate products lack flavonoids, terpenes, and other cannabinoids. However, they reliably offer light or no bitter taste, a true unflavored option, higher CBD content, and no risk of a triggered drug test.

Choosing The Best CBD Oils

How did we come up with this list?

Methodology: Choosing the Best CBD Oil

We intend our guide to the best CBD oils to be comprehensive. We considered several factors: effects, potency, cost, ingredient quality and transparency, flavor, customer service, and sourcing and method of extraction.

Potency: how powerful of a dose does the product offer? How well can you dose it, how accurately? Can you stretch your dollar further?

Cost: great CBD products are typically not low cost, but they are high value and you get a lot for your money.

Ingredient quality and transparency. Unfortunately, today CBD products are in the Wild, Wild West of regulatory territory, so some CBD oils are better than others, and some may even contain harmful components. The labels may not even match the contents, as the FDA has shown. These CBD oils are all accurately labeled and tested for harmful contaminants.

Flavor: many people won’t use it if it tastes terrible; this should at least have a mention.

Customer service, shipping, etc.: constant stress or rudeness ruins a product, too! These companies are excellent.

Sourcing and method of extraction: each CBD oil on this list is reliable and has a verified source. Each is produced using either ethanol or carbon dioxide as a solvent—both are safe and produce clean results.

Which of the Best CBD Oils Is Right for Me?

There are lots of things to consider as you decide which CBD oil is best for you:

  • Do you want the entourage effect from your CBD oil? You need a full-spectrum CBD oil. One that includes aerial parts may be especially appealing to you.
  • Worried about drug testing? Look for a CBD oil made with CBD isolate rather than a full-spectrum or broad-spectrum CBD oil.
  • Are you trying to manage chronic pain? This may mean you need to gradually adjust your doses up or down. Look for CBD oils that offer higher concentrations and more flexibility in dosing for more effective pain management.
  • Are you coping with insomnia? Cost and flexible dosing may be at the top of your list if missing sleep is your concern.
  • Is anxiety your issue? Look for a CBD oil that will allow you to microdose all day long.

Obviously this should highlight the place to start: with your own priorities.
